This is the message I share with parents, students K-20, and community members. You must understand the numbers. Even though it is a credible source reporting, you must understand the numbers, sample size being reported and even the region it comes from in order for the data (stats) to be relevant to you and your work. Thanks Kurt!

This is a great idea. Remove the barriers of transportation, time, and talent in local communities by bringing resources to the people who want and deserve them! I heart the library..

I agree we need more of something. I understand money, money, money.but no one is trying to bring in the money. People from our city go to other cities to enjoy the things they have.but why they don't try to enjoy what we have? WE DONT HAVE ANYTHING TO ENJOY. So what can we do ?

In the DIA's defense, part of what killed the Science Center was an ill-planned exhibit, The Mummies of Some Far-Flung Place. As much as I agree that we need more to culturally pull us to the city, I don't want another landmark to succumb. Maybe what you're seeing is a measured response.

FWIW, I tried making dinner reservations for Foxtown Grille next Thursday and couldn't get in at 6:00. We switched to Angelina Bistro, but when I said I need to be to the Fox at 7:30, they recommended we come in at 5:45. There's a show at the Opera House as well, and they're going to be packed and hopping. There's still a long way to go, but it's far better than ten years ago.

This is a FANTASTIC idea! Will it also be open to the public - or is it only for the media? Will all kinds of companies featured - both products and services? Go Motown!

Rebecca I have now had two very apologetic phone calls from Lake Trust and have been told they are changing the policy because of some of the points I raised in the blog and also in the survey. I offered to write another blog if they in fact make good on this. I hope they do because I really want to love my credit union again!

Well, I don't have any advice for you, but very sorry that happened to you. You were undoubtedly treated rudely and unfairly considering the history of your depositing this same check for so long. Some people just like to exert their control over others, and it seems you ran into one such person. The arbitrary nature of his judgement comes shining through in the fact that he finally changed his mind once you threatened him with exposure. I have been a 1099 person and agree that contract workers will continue to grow, particularly in these economic times. So I applaud your efforts. I will say that I was shopping for a credit union, and will cross this one off my list. The fact that a a person like this has a leadership position at this credit union speaks to the culture of the place. Thanks for the heads up.

I can so relate to this story. My situation wasn't with a credit union though, it was Comerica. The gals at our local credit union (bank we moved our funds to) have been so very sweet. Our funds are immediately available with the exception of a night deposit.

DEGC's Green Grocer Project has been a partner and supporter of Metro Foodland. Its new healthy rewards program was launched through help from a Green Grocer Project technical assistance grant. In addition, DEGC secured $50,000 in grant monies from the Wallace Center and MEDC, as well as in-kind support from the Eastern Market Corporation to pilot a fresh and local farm stand at the store which launched in October. DEGC staff has invested significant attention to working with Metro Foodland to implement the farm stand and to make connections to other resources the store has requested.

While it may be true that media overplay the "food desert" phrase, DEGC's Green Grocer Project has been working diligently with Detroit's independent grocers to improve their stores, open new ones, and generally develop better food choices for Detroit consumers. While the media might play up DEGC's role with national and regional chains, we've also invested significant staff time, resources, and care into working with independent grocers. In focus groups with Detroit residents about grocery stores in their neighborhoods, they've expressed a desire for certain operational improvements. We're committed to helping grocers make those improvements to meet consumer demand.
