Air show enthusiasts and military buffs alike, your time has come.

On August 19-20 Selfridge Air Base will have its 2017 open house and air show.

It is a special event this year since it is the air base’s centennial.

Headlining the air show portion are members of the U. S. Air Force Thunderbirds F-16 Demonstration Team, among other aerial acts representing every era of military aviation for the last 100 years. The Thunderbirds will have six F-16 Fighting Falcons flying up to 700 mph and as close as 18 inches apart. The air show will begin at 11:00 a.m. on August 19.

During their time here Thunderbird team members will visit with special guests from local high schools and Make-A-Wish foundation, take Detroit Red Wings’ goalie, Jimmy Howard, on a demonstration flight in an F-16 Fighting Falcon and enjoy a meal made by students of the Macomb Community College Culinary Arts program.

They will also join members of the 127th Wing as they host the Commander’s Centennial Hangar Reception Friday evening. Members of the demonstration team will join ticket holders during dinner, enjoy a twilight air show and a military tribute concert headlined by country-music band, “A Thousand Horses.”

The band will headline the show with special guest NASH FM Next Talent Competition finalist Mac Watts and Nashville recording artist Kaitlyn Barbee. A Thousand Horses delivers an authentic fusion of Southern rock and contemporary Country mixed with rowdy jams.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m. General admission guests are encouraged to bring folding chairs and blankets. Coolers and backpacks are prohibited. For tickets please click here.

The Air Show Preview Party includes:

  • MiG-17 Demo
  • Misty Blues Skydiving Team
  • T-6 Starfire
  • Fireworks

While most people will be there to look up, with good reason, the ground will have its own points of interest.

There will be a center so kids can learn about military aviation, called a STEM Engagement Zone. There will also be a veterans’ zone and more than 20 different air craft, including the 127th Wing’s own KC-135 Stratotanker and A-10 Thunderbolt, and the newest joint force striker, the F-35 Lightning II. Dozens of static aircraft displays representing every era of military aviation dating back to World War I will be on display.
