When you visit the Scarab Club’s lounge be sure and look up. You’ll find the signatures of such famous artists as Diego Rivera, Marcel Duchamp and Isamu Noguchi on its beams.
A new signature by local architectural sculptor Glen Michaels will be unveiled at the club’s opening reception of its BEAMS exhibit on Friday, April 7 from 5-8 p.m. The exhibit runs through May 20.
“The beams of the Scarab Club’s second-floor lounge have become a living artifact, evolving over the years with the addition of each artist who adds their signature” says Ashley Hennen, executive director. “Artists are invited to sign the beam as a means of honoring their significant and lasting contribution to the arts.”
A Birmingham resident, Glen Michaels has created unique works of art commissioned for major public buildings and private collections throughout the country. He is known for the composition of his work, which includes an outstanding array of materials. He is the recipient of many awards and grants including a Michigan Foundation for the Arts Award and a Louis Comfort Tiffany Apprenticeship Grant. Major commissions include the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC, The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Building, Goddard Space Center, in Greenbelt, Maryland and the Detroit People Mover, Bricktown Station.
Michaels holds a Master of Fine Arts from Cranbrook Academy of Art.
Michaels’ work will be exhibited in The Scarab Club’s main gallery along with a number of other beam signatories, including Gary Grimshaw, Michael Hall, John Hegarty, Lester Johnson, Balthazar Korab, Charles McGee, Nancy Mitchnick, Patricia Quinlan, Bill Rauhauser, Gilda Snowden and Robert Wilbert.
