There are way too many people in Southeast Michigan who stare hunger in the face during the holidays and every day, but you can only do so much, right? Well, now you can do a little more.

On Tuesday, December 13 your donation to Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan will be doubled thanks to the board of directors and other generous donors. Normally, $1 provides three meals, but on Double Your Donation Day each $1 donation will provide six means to a hungry child in Southeast Michigan during the holiday season.

There are 300,000 kids in Southeast Michigan who rely on schools for free or reduced-fee meals, so when that school bell rings and their holiday vacation begins, they are shy at least one meal, often more.

“The holidays can be especially stressful for families on the edge,” says Gerry Brisson, president of Gleaners. “Higher heating bills start to strain tight budgets. On top of that, parents whose children get free or reduced-price lunches at school have to make up those meals when they’re home on break. The donations we receive on Double Your Donation Day will have a huge impact on our ability to get food to these families and others who need some extra help to make ends meet.”

One in five Michigan children struggles with hunger. December’s Double Your Donation Day will help Gleaners distribute more than 3 million meals this month. Food for children and their families will be provided through Gleaners’ school-based Mobile Pantries and its network of over 535 partner agencies serving families in need.

“I’m very grateful to my fellow board members for supporting this exciting matching gift opportunity,” says Katy Locker, Detroit program director for the Knight Foundation and chair of the Gleaners board of directors. “The need is still great, so I hope we inspire many in our community to stop and give generously to keep hunger at bay over the holidays and beyond.”
