Registration still open for Turkey Trot’s 10K, 5K, 1 Mile on Thanksgiving Day

It may be a month late, but why not bring a little bit of Halloween to Thanksgiving and at the same time burn some calories before you sit down to your holiday dinner?

Often called the “parade before the parade,” thousands of people in costumes run in the Turkey Trot’s 10K, 5K, or 1 Mile before America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

This year is the Turkey Trot’s 34th anniversary. It is presented by Strategic Staffing Solutions.

There are several distances to choose from – the Strategic Staffing Solutions 10K Turkey Trot Run, the 5K Stuffing Strut Run/Walk and family friendly Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Mashed Potato Mile.

There are also two combination events – the Drumstick Double (10K & 5K), and the new Cranberry Combo (1 Mile & 5K).

Here are the prices through November 21:

  • 10K or 5K – $43
  • 1 Mile – $28
  • Drumstick Double (10K & 5K) – $63
  • Cranberry Combo (Mile & 5K) – $58

You can still register on Nov. 23 at Cobo Center, but the prices go up for every event other than the 1 Mile run.

Those who participate will get a packet that includes a t-shirt and a bib number, which is to be worn up front. The number also has the timing tag. If you can’t manage to find any safety pins, they can be provided.

Advance race packets can be picked up until Saturday ,Nov. 19  at one of the nine satellite locations (see below for locations and times).  You can also click here for the downloadable location chart.

Packet pickup will also be available for pre-registered participants at the S3 Turkey Trot Expo, which takes place in Room E of Cobo Center (previously the Michigan Room, on the lower level). Hours are Wednesday, November 23 from noon until 7:00 p.m. and Thursday, November 24 from 6:15 – 8:30 a.m.  Before going to the pre-registration tables, please look up your race number posted on the nearby wall.

Registration will be available only on Wednesday. There is no race day registration.

Event highlights include:

  • Expanded starting line on Griswold in front of the Guardian and Penobscot Building
  • Redesigned shirt and medal designs
  • The Cranberry Combo – complete both the BCBSM Mashed Potato Mile AND the 5K Stuffing Strut to receive a unique, outsized Finisher’s Medal
  • Finishers of the Drumstick Double awarded a large, custom-designed medal
  • Expanded Expo

After 34 years the Turkey Trot tradition is still going strong. It can be a good way to put off the Thanksgiving weight gain, see a nice spectacle, or worst case scenario … you get to avoid your annoying relatives for a few hours, at least.
