Ben, Argo, Gimme, Duke and Thor are going to be safer when they patrol Detroit streets.
These K-9 officers will now have bullet resistant vests thanks to a donation from Strategic Staffing Solutions, an international IT and business services company based in Detroit.
These police dogs lay their lives on the line every day just like their handlers and fellow officers. Without vests they are vulnerable and unprotected while fighting crime. The canine officers alert their handlers to narcotics, bombs and explosives, track violent criminals and assist in search and rescue missions.
Buying vests for police dogs is simply not in the budget for the Detroit Police Department and many other law enforcement agencies.
“Once I met Fletcher the bomb dog and the rest of the unit, I knew that we had to support them,” says Paul Huxley, chair of Strategic Staffing Solutions and the Michigan Humane Society. “Detroit, public safety and animal welfare are three causes we’re passionate about and those causes meet here with the K-9 unit.”
The bullet resistant vests will stop the same rounds of ammunition as the vests worn by our officers. They are made from seam-sealed, waterproof Ripstop Nylon, using a special reinforcing technique that makes them resistant to tearing and ripping.
“Our canines are beloved and valued, within the Detroit Police Department” says Detroit Police Department Chief James E. Craig. “We are thrilled that Strategic Staffing Solutions is helping to protect our canines. We are truly humbled and grateful for their continued support and generosity.”
The canines receiving the five vests are:
- K9 Ben – Handler Officer Mark Golembeiwski
- K9 Argo – Handler Officer Eric O’Neil
- K9 Gimme – Handler Officer Austin Carr
- K9 Duke – Handler Sergeant Garza
- K9 Thor – Handler Sergeant Garza
The five vests were purchased from Armor Express and Midwest Public Safety Solutions and donated by Strategic Staffing Solutions through the Detroit Public Safety Foundation.
