Businesses, volunteers needed to adopt a Detroit school for Neighborhoods Day and make a difference

9th Annual Arise Detroit Neighborhood Days. Detroit, Mi, August 1, 2015

Stores started to sell back to school supplies the day after the Fourth of July 4. In August, ARISE Detroit! will help get the schools and classrooms ready to put those supplies to use and be safe for their students.

On August 6, as a part of the organization’s 10th annual Neighborhood Day, businesses and volunteers will team up with Detroit Public Schools to get the buildings ready for the 2016-17 school year.

Eleven schools are looking for help from the businesses and volunteers to get that done. The services needed vary and include painting, planting gardens and flowers, repairing sports fields, mowing lawns, plumbing repairs, boarding up nearby vacant homes, and more.

So far this year, PNC Bank alone has adopted 3 schools.

At last year’s Neighborhoods Day, 12 schools were taken care of by businesses and local organizations.

For Neighborhoods Day itself, the activities planned are cleanup projects, building new housing, back-to-school fairs, garage sales, community art displays, church programs, health fairs, youth concerts, parades, anti-crime events, volunteer recruitment and more.

ARISE Detroit! assists local block clubs, churches, associations, businesses, and community groups in promoting their events.

Groups that want to adopt a Detroit school should e-mail their contact information to info@arisedetroit.org or call 313-921-1955.

If you are interested in volunteering go to http://www.arisedetroit.org/volunteer/ and click on the Neighborhoods Events List. Check out the list of projects, select the project that interests you and phone the contact person listed for the project and make arrangements.

The participating schools are listed below and on the ARISE Detroit! website.

The clean up takes place from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. on August, 6.

We all know many of our Detroit schools need help. You can make a difference by volunteering and encouraging companies to adopt one of these schools. Organizations with enough people and capital can do something for the upcoming generation. It’s the hands-on approach makes us all part of the change.

The Kresge Foundation is one of ARISE Detroit!’s major funders.
