You have a chance to put Detroit on the Food & Wine foodie map.
One of Detroit’s own has been nominated for the magazine’s “Best New Chef In America” People’s Choice Award.
Marc Djzolija, owner and chef of Wright & Company, is the only nominee located in the City of Detroit. His restaurant is on the second floor of the historic Wright-Kay Building on Woodward.
Voting is open until April 8 at 5 p.m. Click here to vote. You can vote as often as you like each and every day until then.
Food & Wine says Djozlija is “amazing” because “the Wolfgang Puck alumnus now has his own place in downtown Detroit where he serves excellent, boldly flavored small plates like bay scallops in brandy and dates with almonds and gorgonzola.” His “quintessential dish,” according to the magazine, is lime-poached shrimp with cilantro-tomato relish and avocado mousse.
“My business partner and I have worked hard to create a place in the heart of Detroit that reflects Detroit’s unique character,” said Djozlija.
Here’s his advice to young cooks. “Never stop learning. “What do you do when there’s nothing to do? Don’t be complacent. A lot of the best chefs in the world are just conscientious people who are information sponges and never went to culinary school.”
The contest spans 10 United States regions. The chef with the most votes will be named The People’s Best New Chef for 2015. The winners will be revealed April 9.
Djozlija is in elite company in the Great Lakes region. Other Detroit area chefs in the competition are Torino’s Garret Lipar from Ferndale and James Rigato from The Root in White Lake, Michigan.
Wright & Company is located at 1500 Woodward in Detroit. More information can be found on its website at http://www.wrightdetroit.com/.
