Delta Airlines is thanking military personnel and their families for their service in a very special way this holiday season. It is the presenting sponsor of the “Holiday Military Salute” at the Freedom Center military lounge at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport. Set aside from the hustle and bustle of the terminal at Detroit Metro, the Freedom Center is a place where those in the military and their families can relax and forget the chaos and headaches of travel.
The Center is located adjacent to Gate A43 in DTW’s McNamara Terminal. Amenities like juices, coffee, soft drinks, snacks, bottled water and sandwiches are all provided free of charge … It’s a world-class military lounge.
“Delta Air Lines has been a wonderful supporter of Freedom Center since we opened our doors in November of 2011,” said Ken Pratt, president of Michigan Armed Forces Hospitality Center, Inc. “Our lounge will be greatly appreciated by the many military members and families during this holiday season.”
Since its opening, the military lounge has hosted more than 120,000 military, family members and veterans.
“We are very proud to sponsor this year’s holiday military lounge along with Freedom Center,” said Andrea Newman, senior vice president for government affairs for Delta. “This wonderful facility offers a respite from the busy travel season for members of the military, veterans and their families. We are honored to serve and assist them during the holiday travel period.”
Volunteers open up shop at 6:00 am and stay until the days flight operations have ended. In case of the unpredictable or just problematic winter weather that haunts the area, the Freedom Center will remain open all night to accommodate for delays.
The Michigan Armed Forces Hospitality Center, Inc. has declared Delta its official airline.
“Delta has been a great supporter of Freedom Center from the day we opened our doors in early November 2011,” said John McCandless, vice president of the Michigan Armed Forces Hospitality Center. “Delta employees, led by Ken Pratt, then a Delta 767 Captain, initiated temporary holiday lounges at DTW for our traveling military in 2009 and 2010. Thanks to their initial efforts, we now have a dedicated facility opened 365 days a year.”
Detroit Metro is not the only place the non-profit group reaches out to traveling soldiers and their families. In addition to the McNamara Terminal lounge, it also operates a lounge in Troy for the benefit of new recruits and their family members.
The Freedom Center opened its doors on November 1, 2011 and was official dedicated on Veterans Day 2011 – 11/11/11 – at 1100 hours. It is operated by a dedicated group of volunteers.
