Indie shopping mecca Rust Belt Market looks to crowd funding to expand

The Rust Belt Market is a story of reinvention and reuse in Metro Detroit. They took what was a vacant chain anchor store spot and turned it into a vibrant, independent market for creative goods.

The weekend market has become a downtown Ferndale staple in the two years since they opened their doors at Nine Mile and Woodward.  Chris and Tiffany Best have been able to take the idea of a year round craft fair and turn the former Old Navy Outlet into an artist market that thrives on Saturdays and Sundays.  Their hope for the expansion is to build a space to host events during the week and become more of the anchor attraction. That, in turn, will help surrounding businesses as well.

I cannot wait to see the final product after all of the work is finished, and I know I am not the only one excited for this news.

“They (Chris and Tiffany Best) have blown everyone away. They have managed in just 15,000 square feet to capture the essence of this community.” Said Ferndale’s Mayor Dave Coulter, he continues “they had the vision, hard work, and ethics to make this (Rust Belt) work.”

The new layout will include a 4,000 square foot event space.

The Rust Belt Market folks currently have a Kickstarter campaign going to help raise the $20,000 for their build-it-themselves expansion. The expansion will include the addition of a 4,000 square foot event space in the middle of the Rust Belt, along with individual spaces for the residential artists, and they will be fixing up the restrooms.

With such a loyal customer base they have already raised close to $18,000 since starting the campaign February 20th. The Best’s are also offering many interesting incentives to those who back the campaign, for instance you could host a party in the brand new event space for 50 of your friends for a donation of $500.

If you have never been to The Rust Belt Market in Ferndale, I highly suggest you take some time out during the weekend to go stroll around this artist market. If you’re into the creative, the crafty, the fun or the funky, I promise you will not be disappointed.

The Rust Belt Market is located at 22801 Woodward Avenue, Ferndale, Michigan 48220. They are open Saturday 11:00am – 7:00pm and Sunday 11:00am – 6:00pm.

  1. Good piece, Shianne, though this is the first time I've seen Tiffany Best identified as Vanessa.

The Kickstarter page at the link above refers to her as Tiffany in several places.
