Wyandotte, founded in 1867, is not only long on history but also full of charm.
Growing up on the eastside of metro Detroit, I rarely went downriver. But since I had been to Wyandotte last summer for a bridal shower, I knew I wanted to take a bit more time there to explore. Last weekend a group of us finally made it for some shopping, dinner, and drinks. What we found was a cute downtown with great stores and friendly people.
One of the best parts of going to downtown Wyandotte was its walkability. Many of the stores were near each other. Also, to get the best shopping experience, it’s probably best to head over on a late morning or afternoon. Maybe make it a little weekend getaway in your own backyard!
Let me introduce you to some of the stores we found.
The Candy Store
The Candy Store was our first stop when we got to Wyandotte. After doing the Candy Store Roundup for Valentine’s Day I didn’t think I would have been in the mood for candy, but this place had these ginger hard candies that I hadn’t seen in ages! I bought about a half pound of them to hold me over until the next time we made the trip down. Each of us left with a bag of goodies from my ginger hard candies, to salt water taffy, to chocolates from the case in the back. If you are in search for a three pound, 2 ½ foot gummy worm this store has it! Need a gag gift for someone? They have pickle mints and bacon flavored gum. In short, if you are in the area and have a sweet tooth I would highly suggest stopping in. They have a bit of everything, and who doesn’t like candy?
The Candy Store is located at 3209 Biddle Avenue Wyandotte, MI 48192
Hours: Sunday 11:00pm – 5:00pm, Monday through Saturday 10:00am – 8:00pm, on 3rd Fridays they are open until 9:00pm
It All Makes Scents
One might think that a store called It All Makes Scents would be just a candle store, but it is much more! When I walked into the store I fell in love with it instantly. It is one of those stores where you could pick up gifts for every woman in your life, because they are so eclectic. While they do have candles, they also have purses, jewelry, and decorative wares. I highly suggest stopping in here if you ever need a gift, or if you are looking to spoil yourself.
It All Makes Scents is located at 3041 Biddle Avenue Wyandotte, MI 48192
Hours: Sunday Closed, Monday through Thursday and Saturday 10:00am – 6:00pm, and Friday 10:00am – 7:00pm
Belicoso Martini Cigar Bar
It was still a bit too early to have dinner by the time we were finished our time at It All Makes Scents, so we decided to stop into Belicoso Martini Cigar Bar for a drink. They have an extensive martini menu, and a nice sized humidifier filled with cigars for you to purchase. The low light and soft jazz music playing in the background is the perfect place to grab a nightcap.
Belicoso’s is located at 3030 Biddle Avenue Wyandotte, MI 48192
Hours: Sunday Closed, Monday through Thursday 12:00pm – 12:00am, Friday and Saturday 12:00pm – 2:00am
Gregorio’s Italian Restaurant
Gregorio’s was our final stop on our mini tour or Wyandotte, and it did notdisappoint. The converted house makes you feel like you stepped into someone’s living room. Our server did an excellent job of making sure we were being taken care of. Our food arrived quickly and everyone enjoyed the dishes. The most important thing to remember if you decide to check out Gregorio’s is to save room for dessert! We ordered strawberry cheesecake and cannoli for the table, and they were by far my favorite part of the meal. It was really a nice ending to our adventure in Wyandotte.
Gregorio’s is located at 2356 Biddle Avenue Wyandotte, MI 48192
Hours: Sunday 4:00pm – 8:00pm, Monday closed, Tuesday through Friday 11:00am – 9pm, Saturday 4:00pm – 9:00pm
Oh, and there’s one more cool thing! Wyandotte also puts on a 3rd Friday event every month from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. It is a great way to experience Wyandotte’s downtown.
This isn’t a comprehensive list, obviously. For more ideas, check out the Wyandotte Business Association website.
P.S. – We didn’t get a chance to stop in, but the iconic Sanders has a store in downtown Wyandotte as well. Mmm .. Bumpy Cake.
