According to organizers and those displaying the big and small watercraft, boating in our state is on the upswing as the economy begins to turn around a bit.

“Boat sales across the country are up 10-percent and 20-percent in Michigan this year,” says Nikki Polan, executive director of the Michigan Boating Industries Association and manager of the show. “People have paid down some of their debt and feel more secure about making this kind of purchase.”

There are 130 exhibitors, up from 110 last year. As a matter of fact, the show has grown so much that it had to be moved to a larger space in Cobo Center.  That’s a good sign for the show and for fans of the great outdoors, looking for a new toy.

Of the more than 60 lines represented, seven are made right here in Michigan. Boats of all types and prices are on display and for those in the market, there’s probably something here for just about any pocket book.

The show’s news release points out that the popular Chris Craft brand started in Michigan back in 1874 and is now known the world over. Among this year’s Michigan exhibitors are Manitou Pontoons of Lansing; Crest Pontoon of Owosso; Tiara Yachts out of Holland; Four Winns of Cadillac, as well as Glaston and Wellcraft brands.

Also, Detroit Unspun readers may remember the Gibbs Sports Amphibian that made an appearance at the North American International Auto Show in January. They are also made in Michigan and are on display.
