The seer groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, says it’ll be an early spring. According to him, we have just six more weeks of winter. But there’s still plenty of time to brave the cold, blustery, snowy weather and have a blast .. a Motown Winter Blast that is.
It’s back again this year this weekend (Feb 8-10) and there are some great new things to do.
S’more Happy Hour
The first annual S’more Happy Hour is Friday, February 8 and runs from 4:00 pm-6:30 pm. It’s a great way to get to know your downtown neighbors. Pass this information to your friends working downtown. The event includes:
- A Free s’more Kit
- Happy Hour Drink specials at Winter Blast, Fountain Bistro and Hard Rock Café
- Half-off Small Plates at Olga’s Kitchen
- Outdoor performance by HotSauce onstage at Campus Martius Park
Get your spot at S’more Happy Hour by registering at http://www.winterblast.com/smoreregistration.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg (forgive the pun). There’s a lot more to the Motown Winter Blast.
It’s the only weekend of the year you can skate for free at Campus Martius Park thanks to Charter One Bank. Plus, the first 250 people who arrive to rent skates at Campus Martius Park will get them for free courtesy of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network.
Hockey, hockey, hockey
There’s hockey galore. The Detroit Red Wings and Olympia Entertainment will bring fun, hockey-themed entertainment to this year’s festivities. For the first time, the Red Wings will have a pair of interactive hockey games including top shot, where fans will have a chance to win prizes. It’s in the Comfort Zone tent in Cadillac Square.
And there’s still more hockey. Try out the Hockey Shot competition where you’ll have a chance to shoot and score cool prizes from the Winter Blast and Detroit Red Wings. The grand prize winner will get a choice of a free set of braces or a dental care package from Great Expressions Dental Centers … that’s something you can sink your teeth into … or two tickets to an upcoming Red Wings home game or a weekend in Detroit package courtesy of the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel.
It takes place on the Campus Martius Park ice rink on Friday and Saturday at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
Fire & Ice makes science fun for the kids
The kids are getting special attention, too. The Fire & Ice Show will dazzle them with things like foggy dry ice storms, gravity-defying beach balls and a Mad Science burp-flavored potion. The show runs every 90 minutes starting at 5:00 pm Friday and noon on Saturday and Sunday. There are also Hands-on Science Fun Stations, the Mad Science slime recipe with free slime to take home and a Color Changing Lab that teaches about the effects of the sun as the kids make their own UV bead bracelets.
The kids can test their science knowledge at Science Trivia and check out the Bubbling Potions. Ever see scissors sizzle and shiver? Ever take a bubble shower?
Girl Scouts debut cookie van
Love those Girl Scout cookies? You can get them at Winter Blast, too. The Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan will have its Cookie Van, a mobile cookie selling unit, at the Blast. You can buy the cookies from February 8, which is National Girl Scout Cookie Day, through February 10.
You might even win Girl Scout cookies for a year!
Cupid’s Undie Run
If you haven’t had enough yet … and are really brave, courageous and bold … there’s Cupid’s Undie Run on Saturday, February 9. It’s only mile. That’s a long way in your undies but the run raises funds and awareness for neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow along various types of nerves in children.
Check-in run starts 12:00 pm at Cheli’s Chili Bar. The race starts at 2:30 pm and winds around Comerica Park and Ford Field. Anyone over the age of 21 is welcome to participate, and 100 percent of the proceeds raised will be donated directly to the Children’s Tumor Foundation (CTF). 100 percent of the proceeds raised will be donated directly to the Children’s Tumor Foundation.
Cupid’s Undie Run is the world’s largest organized underwear run, and is held the weekend before Valentine’s Day. The goal is to raise more than $1 million for NF research in 2013. Since the first event in February 2010, Cupid’s Undie Run has expanded from Washington D.C. to 16 cities across the nation, including Detroit.
