Knowledge. Entertainment. Success. A book can give you all of these things and more. So, what can be said about someone who gives books out? That they believe in those things and believe books can help give them to many people. That is what the 15th annual book drive from Strategic Staffing Solutions (S3) has done.
More than 1,000 books were collected this year from customers, staff, friends and community partners attending S3’s holiday party. On December 17 they were delivered to A.L. Holmes Elementary-Middle School and Brewer Elementary-Middle School.
Roy S. Roberts, emergency financial manager, accepted the donation from Carl Bentley, executive vice president of Strategic Staffing Solutions, in the library of A.L. Holmes Elementary-Middle School. When the books were dropped off Leenet Campbell-Williams, the school’s principal, was waiting for them along with Cecily Wilson, principal of Brewer, and fifth graders from Holmes.
Over the past few years S3, a Detroit-based global IT and business services company, has played a pivotal role in filling newly renovated libraries in Detroit Public Schools. For example, in 2009 the company donated hundreds of books to Clippert Academy.
S3 has a strong partnership with Clippert through the DPS Business Corps Program. That program builds robust partnerships between schools and area businesses and community organizations to improve academic achievement in schools throughout the district. (Some of us at the Hub have gone to Clippert with S3 employees to talk with the children there about potential careers and how to achieve them.)
Donating books to schools is only one of the giving things S3 has done during its Holiday Spirit Week. Earlier this week employees dressed as elves during their lunch hour and delivered stocking to Detroit’s homeless. The stockings held socks, gloves, deodorant, comb/brush, toothpaste, toothbrush, scarfs, hats, vitamins, soap, wash cloth, roll of quarters, chap stick, a gift card to Subway/Jimmy John’s/Coffee Beanery, cookies, belts, apples and oranges and more. The items were donated by S3 employees. The stockings were donated by Bentley.
“We don’t just talk about it at S3…WE DO IT!!!” is the mantra at this company.
Just for fun S3’s Spirit of the Holidays Week kicked off with ugly sock days. Check out the pictures. There are some real winners. At the Hub we believe in full disclosure. Cindy Pasky, founder and CEO of S3, is our board chair. We are lucky to have her.
