It’s been a few months since Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast, and although it seems coverage on relief efforts has dropped significantly, there are still people on the ground in New York City helping those affected by the storm.
With the holiday season upon us, it’s even more difficult on the families displaced from their homes. With this in mind, Detroit-native, NYC-dwelling singer Benita Charles is giving a holiday performance to benefit the children affected by Hurricane Sandy. She’s partnering with the Marine Corps Toys for Tots that Charles to spread holiday cheer to the kids who most need it.
“In the concert I will sing holiday favorites, some of my favorite covers songs and original music. It’s a light-hearted, festive evening of music and entertainment all for a good cause,” Charles says. “This is my fourth annual concert and this year I especially wanted to donate because the Marine Corps will work with other local charities to make sure children who were affected by Hurricane Sandy will have a good Christmas this year. It’s my way of helping in such a tragic situation.”
Having moved to New York in 1996, Charles is a long-time New York resident, but doesn’t forget the foundation that Detroit has given her in her career. “In Detroit, I learned how to be a professional entertainer,” she explains. “From a creative standpoint … and even on the business end, I learned responsibility by making my own money to support my art… I’m not sure I could have survived the fast-pace of New York without my Detroit background.”
For readers who aren’t in New York this weekend, a live stream of the Benita Charles & Friends Holiday Show will be available here on Sunday December 16, at 8pm.
