Christmas sounds and sights warm up the Villages – and a chance to hear them for free!

As the holiday season picks up there are some great events to check out this weekend in the Villages of Detroit. In case you didn’t know, The Villages are comprised of a group of neighborhoods on the east side of the city along the riverfront including Indian Village, East Village, West Village, the Gold Coast and the Berry Subdivision.

First …the sounds. If you love listening to the sounds of Christmas you are in luck this weekend! The Community Chorus of Detroit has been working hard to get ready for its “Christmas Joy!” concert on December 14 and 15. The concert will be held at the Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church located at 8625 E. Jefferson in Detroit’s Indian Village. Friday’s concert will begin at 7:30 pm, and Saturdays performance at 4 pm. Tickets are $16 dollars per person, and can be purchased on the Community Chorus of Detroit’s website. Even better … you can win a pair of free tickets on Twitter! Just tweet “#ILoveDetroit @DetroitUnspun” as part of a tweet and we’ll select the winner at random Thursday (12/13) at 6pm.

The Community Chorus of Detroit was started in 2010 by Diane Linn to create a group that could unite and create beautiful music. The 55-member choir comes from all over metro Detroit (Detroit Unspun’s own Maura Campbell is part of this great group).

This year’s Christmas performance is extraordinary because the group has been given special permission to use a rendition of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman” only the Mormon Tabernacle Choir has the right to perform.

Or, maybe you are in the mood to see some of your Christmas favorites on a big screen in a cozy, neighborhood setting?

Another great event that is in the same neighborhood is the Christmas movies that are being screened at the Coffee and (_____) shop (yes, that’s really what’s it’s called) in West Village. Coffee and (____) has partnered with the St. Clair Cinema Club to play Christmas movies on December 15-16, as well as the remaining weekends in December.

Tickets to the movies are only $4 per person. The movie listings and times are available on St. Clair Cinema Club’s website. Along with showing these Christmas movies you can also purchase theater popcorn and great baked goods from Coffee and (_____).  It’s located at 8047 Agnes, just off of Van Dyke.

It’s always so busy during the holiday season sometimes it is just nice to slow down and enjoy a favorite Christmas movie or listen to a choir sing your favorite songs. Luckily this weekend has some great opportunities to enjoy the season!
