Electronic music legends help kids with school supplies at Backpack Music Festival

This weekend, electronic music will take center stage again in the Motor City. This time, it’s with a grander purpose – to help kids get much needed supplies for school.

The 7th annual Backpack Music Festival, happening August 4 and 5 from noon to midnight, is not just another way to enjoy the weekend sun. Festival organizer Judy Shelton has assembled an all-star cast of music innovators to perform at the corner of Grand Blvd. and Second in the outdoor New Center Park amphitheater.

Many people already know Detroit is a hotbed for electronic music. The Movement, that takes over the city each Memorial Day is legendary. Some of the biggest names in the biz come to entertain the overflow crowds. Well, some of those same “folks” like Eddie Fowlkes, Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Terrence Parker and John Collins will all be at the Backpack Music Festival … plus, plus, plus on two stages. There’ll be lots of great music, hotness and fun for the whole family.

Shelton says she started the effort after one day seeing a child walking to school, carrying books in a garbage bag. She vowed to do something to make a difference. A few phone calls later, a lot of planning and the festival was born – growing every year since.

Anyone coming down is encouraged to bring a backpack filled with school supplies to the event. For supporting the cause, your admission, which is only $20, will be discounted to $10. A small price to pay to check out these all-stars and help some kids at the same time.
