Laptops for Ladies Gets Tech in the Hands of Disadvantaged Women

An unusual charity drive is happening in metro Detroit. In anticipation of the holidays, Girls in Tech Detroit is organizing an ongoing drive called “Laptops for Ladies.”They’re taking both used and new laptops and giving them to both disadvantaged women. Through the Detroit Public Schools’ Reality Check Detroit, younger girls will receive donated laptops, while the Lighthouse program of Oakland County sends them to low income mothers. With how important technology is in today’s economy, these laptops might mean the difference for some of these women.

There are drop-off locations in Southfield, Ann Arbor, Plymouth, Farmington Hills, Birmingham, and Sylvan Lake. You can find the detailed list here.

Girls in Tech is a national social network with a branch in the Detroit Metro area. They are committed to “offering a variety of resources and tools for women to supplement and further enhance their professional careers and aspirations in technology. Some of these resources include, educational workshops and lectures, networking functions, round table discussions, conferences, social engagements, and recruitment events.” They are hoping these laptops for ladies (who may have never had one otherwise) will inspire interest in the intersection between artistic and technological fields.
