On June 29th, Michigan students ranging from sophomores in high school to college graduates gathered at the University of Michigan Dearborn for the It’s MI Life college tools and tips conference. Launched by the “Your Child of Michigan” coalition, MI Life is an emerging social networking source that employs a Facebook page, a Twitter feed, a Youtube page, and their own website, www.itsmilife.com. It’s MI Life is geared toward youth navigating career paths, potential colleges, and student aid options, as well as counselors, educators and professionals interested in mentoring opportunities. The conference opened with an introduction to the MI Life website, which offers its users a chance to join smaller college groups, ask questions, and set up their own blogs. “It creates an online presence” says Nancy Hanus, project manager and site editor, “which can be used in both college admissions essays and resumes.”
High school students who attended the conference are asked to serve as ambassadors between the site and their peers. Through connecting via facebook, twitter, posting questions and blogging on the MI Life site, students will foster discussion concerning college choices, career paths, volunteer or job shadowing opportunities and more. Encouraging students to take initiative on setting and achieving their goals after high school, the network further develops a culture of education throughout the state.
